Niendorf harbour is a special experience with its idyllic maritime atmosphere. Yachts gently rock in the wind, waves lap against the sides of the boats. Seagulls cry and the smell of fish and seaweed is in the air wherever you go. Fishermen lay out their nets to dry, and you can get freshly caught fish directly off the boat.

Niendorf harbour was only built in 1920. Previously, the fishermen brought their boats into Travemünde harbour if there were storm warnings, and the small boats were pulled up onto the beach. They were not always safe there.

The fishermen sold their fish and laid out their nets to dry on the beach, which gave off an unpleasant smell, especially in summer.

Fearing declining numbers of visitors as a result, the local council decided to build a harbour for the fishermen. And so today you can watch the hustle and bustle of the fishermen here, breathe in the tangy sea breeze and perhaps even get that urge to set sail for distant shores yourself. If you hire a guest berth, you have several options for paying a visit to Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf on board your sailing or motor yacht. In Niendorf, at the mouth of the river Aalbek, you can moor your charter yacht or your own boat at the sailing club jetty, at the yacht club, at the Evers shipyard or directly in the municipal harbour.

The public car park “Am Vogelpark” is free of charge.

The Hanseatic League is an indisputably important chapter in German and European history and is still present in the way many people think today. Half a millennium passed from its rise as a trading power to its fall.

Visitors to the museum experience the world and life at the time of the Hanseatic League and witness oaths, diplomatic negotiations, piracy, trade boycotts, wars and suffering during one of the great plague epidemics.

Since 2016, a new exhibition on board has been telling the story of life and work on the Passat in a very personal way.

It was launched in 1911 as one of the legendary “Flying P-Liners”. It sailed around the world until 1957. It rounded Cape Horn 39 times. Today, the Passat four-masted barque is Travemünde’s landmark, a museum ship and popular event venue.

It is definitely worth a visit! Since 2016, a new exhibition on board has been telling the story of life and work on the Passat in a very personal way: tracing the diary entries of Herbert Scheuffler, who signed on in 1932 at the age of 15, the exhibition follows the life of a ship’s boy on a great voyage.
